What should happen when a robocar meets an emergency vehicle, to avoid a paradox of safety?
As robotaxis have deployed in pilot projects in various US and Chinese cities, there have been many interactions between them and emergency vehicles, some of which have drawn criticism. The law is simple — all drivers are required to immediately yield to the emergency vehicles with flashers/sirents and pull to the right and stop. There are also interactions with police who are directing traffic, and at fire/emergency scenes. The companies testing the robotaxis (Waymo and Cruise in the USA) have made various efforts to make things go well, but they haven’t always.
