Driverless cars are proving to be job creators, at least so far

When self-driving car hype peaked a few years ago, so did fears of job destruction that would ensue as the technology took hold.

One report published in 2017 forecast 4 million jobs could be lost with a rapid transition to autonomous vehicles, eliminating a key foothold in the middle class for workers without a college degree. As AV companies pushed out deadlines for robo-taxi fleets and dialed back autonomous ambitions, labor forecasts became less apocalyptic and more nuanced, though still warning of significant job loss.
