Waymo and Other Driverless Taxis Move Into a New Era
Waymo said in an end-of-year blog post that it serves more than 1 million fully autonomous rides each month and is on a path to hit that benchmark every week by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, Tesla is adding to its ride-hailing fleet in California with plans for Arizona, Florida and Nevada next, while CEO Elon Musk routinely pitches Tesla’s technological superiority in posts on X. Both companies are working with regulators to gain access to highways and airports, which constitute about 30% of all taxi trips and ride-shares and some of the longest, most profitable routes.
