As you might know, that is the customary parlance used to refer to a car enthusiast (they can “turn a wrench” or mechanically work on a car). Such devotees are often characterized as so-called motorheads or in other countries a revered petrol-head (there is an ongoing debate about whether this “petrol” reference is going to be fitting amidst an era of EVs).
