Rivian’s Ambitious Autonomy Push with Custom Silicon and Lidar
Rivian Automotive Inc. has announced a significant expansion in its autonomous vehicle capabilities, unveiling custom silicon and lidar technology during its first ‘Autonomy & AI Day’ event. The company is set to enhance its electric vehicles with new hardware, including a custom chip developed in collaboration with Arm and TSMC, and a lidar sensor, aiming for a ‘superhuman level’ of onboard sensing. Rivian’s upcoming second-generation R1 trucks and SUVs will feature the ‘Universal Hands-Free’ driver-assistance software, capable of navigating over 3.5 million miles of roads in the USA and Canada by early 2026. The software allows for point-to-point navigation, enabling drivers to take their eyes off the road. Rivian plans to extend its autonomous capabilities to include ride-share services, competing with industry giants like Waymo.
