In driverless shuttle experiments, the lab rats are the scientists

As America finds itself increasingly peppered with public self-driving shuttle trials, industry analysts could be forgiven for wondering what value such experiments deliver beyond fleeting publicity. After all, the vehicles still have training wheels in the form of safety drivers and carefully-crafted operating domains; if they aren’t autonomous, what’s the point?
